Though the nature of the school structure supports the efforts of teachers in gaining satisfaction from their work, it provides few extrinsic incentives--status, upward career mobility, and high wages. The principle of collective bargaining through teachers' unions may produce changes in the teaching profession, especially in the area of higher salaries. (JN)
