Normalcy, Exceptionality and Mainstreaming.
Pekarsky, Daniel
Journal of Education, v163 n4 p320-34 Fall 1981
Discusses competing perspectives on mainstreaming: (1) normalization, which emphasizes changing the individual so s/he can adapt to existing environmental conditions; and (2) denormalization, which advocates transforming the environment to accommodate diverse needs of those considered exceptional. Argues for denormalization but notes the possibility of compromise in choosing a mainstreaming approach. (Author/MJL)
