The teacher's responsibility in deciding what to teach severely/profoundly retarded students is affirmed, and current programs are categorized according to three approaches: optimistic (a sometimes misguided application of normalization theory); traditional (extended readiness activities); and the behavioral (in which certain behaviors are taught for teacher action).
