Prediction as a Means of Inducing Tolerance
Aderman, David; And Others
Journal of Research in Personality, 12, 2, 172-8, Jun 78
Given two assumptions: (1) that people expect a stranger to have attitudes similar to their own, and (2) the disconfirmation of this expectancy by a dissimilar stranger generates an aversive reaction which contributes to his rejection, it was reasoned that tolerance of a dissimilar stranger could be fostered by lessening the aversive reaction to the disconfirmation experience. Suggests that training people to anticipate disagreements may be one promising pathway to increased tolerance. (Author/R K)
