Paradox in Progressive Educational Reform: The South and the Education of Blacks in the Depression Years
Goodenow, Ronald K.
Phylon, 39, 1, 49-65, Spr 78
Progressive educational reform in the South during the Great Depression is examined. Ways in which educational change seemingly functioned to serve modernization while concurrently maintaining racist patterns are illustrated. It is suggested that fundamental change in the conditions of oppression may not be possible without addressing the democratic values implied in American liberalism. (Author/GC)
