Simultaneous teaching of reading and social studies is unworkable because reading skill development (1) takes time away from social studies content; (2) has different objectives; (3) causes students to loose interest in social studies; (4) is too complicated when mixed in with social studies concepts; and (5) is not within the area of expertise of most social studies teachers.
