Single-Peaked Functions and the Theory of Preference
Coombs, Clyde H.; Avrunin, George S.
Psychological Review, 84, 2, 216-30, Mar 77
Dependent variables such as preference, hedonic tone, aesthetic appreciation, and developmental stages are frequently observed to be single-peaked functions of the independent variables. This research addresses the problem of deriving, from more elementary underlying processes, a preference function that rises monotonically to a peak and then falls monotonically. Results are generalized for different conflict situations in individuals. (Editor/RK)
