Data from a survey of 40 colleges that were religious and/or single-sex institutions in the 1960's indicate that tradeoffs must be made when such colleges change their admissions policy for the sake of increased enrollments. It is suggested that these efforts dilute and draw off the traditional institutional strengths, and that the federal government must offer financial aid to maintain the pluralistic nature of American higher education.
