The Role of Environment in a Configurational Theory of Organizations
Shortell, Stephen M.
Human Relations, 30, 3, 275-302, Mar 77
This paper refines existing conceptualizations of organizational environments by distinguishing among environmental complexity, diversity, instability, uncertainty, dependence, and hostility. A typology is presented that suggests that certain combinations of environmental dimensions are important for classifying organizations. Based on the typology and three premises, 12 propositions are derived for empirical testing. (Author/MLF)
