Forward and Backward Associations in Cued Recall: Predictions from the Encoding Specificity Principle
Humphreys, Michael S.; Galbraith, Richard C.
Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1, 6, 702-10, Nov 75
Unidirectional associates were used in a test of the encoding specificity principle with single items. Strong preexperimental associates were effective retrieval cues even when encoding conditions were not conducive to the establishment of a target-cue association. Results suggested that the presence of weak cues on the test reduced the effectiveness of strong cues. (Editor/RK)
