The Relationship of Openness, Difference, and Solidarity to Cultural Integration amid Cultural Fluidity: A Grounded Theory Approach
Harris, Andrew J.; Feathers, Claire E.; Musgrave, Jesse
Journal of Ethnographic & Qualitative Research, v15 n4 p245-263 Sum 2021
Cultural integration is vital to the successful navigation of prolonged cross-cultural experiences; however, the experiences of cultural fluidity such as temporary repatriation to the original culture or a home life that is drastically different from the surrounding culture can frustrate integration and prompt the abandonment of its positive effects. Using grounded theory methodology, we examine how openness to a culture, recognition of differences, and expressions of solidarity contribute to successful cultural integration. According to the present study's emerging theory, when culturally fluid individuals (CFIs) are confronted with the possibility of cultural integration, an increase in openness to a new culture, self-recognition of the CFI's differentiation from it, and a desire for expressing solidarity with it help the CFI to successfully integrate elements of the new culture with their existing identity. Findings also include the various levels of cultural integration adopted by those individuals who live in culturally fluid situations.
