Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v33 n2 p58-59 Sum 2021
Creating socially just, anti-biased environments begins, not surprisingly, with the individuals who lead children. The NAEYC publication "Anti-Bias Education for Young Children and Ourselves," by Louise Derman-Sparks and Julie Olsen Edwards, provides a road map that can be used to begin this work. Building an anti-biased practice, one that shapes Montessori classrooms and schools, will not be easy. It requires intentionality, deep personal reflection, and a willingness to experience discomfort and make mistakes. The rewards, like those found in other aspects of our Montessori practice, will come from the joyful smiles on the faces of the children and families served who will come to know that they are valued, that they are welcomed, and that they are seen.
