Inquiry + Math Workshop Model = Success!
O'Connor, Kathryn; Dearborne, Emma; Casa, Tutita
Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, v114 n3 p187-195 Mar 2021
If student-centered practices in reading and writing workshops work for students, why aren't these same practices used during mathematical instruction? Workshop models center the instruction on students and offer them the time and freedom to be independent in their work, moving toward high-level, inquiry-based learning. The authors experienced a lightbulb moment when it was realized that impactful learning experiences could be offered to mathematics students through workshops. These learning opportunities can address the first three Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMP): "Making sense of problems and persevere in solving them" (SMP 1), "Reason abstractly and quantitatively" (SMP 2), and "Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others" (SMP 3) (NGA Center and CCSSO 2010). In this article, the authors share three steps that were undertaken in their classrooms to implement student-centered math workshops that were developed over time and that teachers can adapt to their own contexts.
