Doing Grounded Theory with Video-Based Research
Habib, Sabrina; Hinojosa, Ramon
Journal of Ethnographic & Qualitative Research, v10 n1 p42-52 Fall 2015
Video recorded interviews provide researchers with an added layer of information beyond the traditional audio data. Video freezes the research moment in time, granting the ability to access instances as they happened in real-time that might otherwise be lost to the limits of human attention span. This ability greatly assists in the development of conceptual and theoretical insights. The growing popularity of video-based research is a testament to its richness, including the unique opportunities this medium provides for sequential analysis, dissemination, and collaboration. However, video data collection and analysis also demand careful planning and organization. Video can be an intimidating medium due to its technical and time-consuming nature. We offer insights into the conceptual, practical, and technical aspects of using visual data through examples from our own research. We use Grounded Theory Method due to its systematic way of collecting and analyzing data, which is suitable to video-based studies.
