Journal of Ethnographic & Qualitative Research, v9 n3 p237-246 Spr 2015
Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) is a condition that is experienced by adopted or foster children when they fail to attach to their primary caregivers. Children with RAD are known by clinicians and counselors to profoundly challenge their adoptive or foster parents and school personnel. This article highlights the findings of a qualitative study of some of the experiences of primary caregivers of children with RAD. We present the storied experiences of primary caretakers of children with RAD in order to illustrate the situations that they might face daily. This study is significant, since the impact of ongoing interactions with children with RAD on their caregivers is a largely unexplored area of research. Moreover, there is a paucity of qualitative research in this area that might illuminate the stories of experience of caring for children with RAD. It is anticipated that this article might be informative for teacher educators focused on special education, school-based special education resource workers, general education teachers, foster care and adoption specialists, and parents or potential parents of children with RAD.
