Bringing More STEAM to Mathematics Education
Solin, Pavel
International Journal for Technology in Mathematics Education, v24 n4 p191-198 2017
Most students view mathematics as something that is "nerdy and sophisticated" rather than "creative and artistic". In this paper we present a way of exposing the creative and artistic aspect of math through simple visual coding and 3D modelling projects that can be done in any modern web browser. Note that Art is rich in geometric shapes and repeating patterns. Think of mandalas, mosaics, Southwestern pottery, Native American symbols. Many of these patterns start with a basic shape or line, which can then be repeated, rotated, and combined with other shapes to form beautiful and complex designs. Through these art projects, it is possible to attract to mathematics, coding and 3D modelling girls and many other students who otherwise would not be interested.
