Social Construction of Gender: Stories of Multiple Sclerosis Care
Hughes, Jennifer C.
Journal of Ethnographic & Qualitative Research, v10 n3 p180-196 Spr 2016
This qualitative research explored the caregiving dynamics of patients and caregivers of multiple sclerosis (MS) to see if gender affected the caregiving experience. The purpose was to explore, develop, and understand perceptions of care among care receivers with MS and caregivers. Twenty participants were interviewed for this study, and their responses were analyzed for summative content using NVivo® software. The data suggested that gender provides a dimension for understanding the social construction of MS, including daily responsibilities of both caregiver and care receiver. Participants were acutely aware of gender when required to complete a care event or task outside of traditional gender roles; female caregivers typically mentioned tasks such as lawn care, home maintenance, and driving, whereas male caregivers focused on domestic chores such as shopping, meal preparation, and laundry. Such tasks falling outside traditional gender roles were frequently discussed. Deviation from gender role expectations was a point of awareness for participants and this affected the perceptions of both giving and receiving care.
