Russo, James
Australian Primary Mathematics Classroom, v25 n2 p37-38 2020
In this article, the author describes how to help develop students' conceptual understanding of fractions through the tactical card-based game Nearest to One. Nearest to One promotes number-sense based strategies for comparing fractions, such as benchmarking (e.g., Is the fraction greater or less than one-half?) and building to the next whole, also known as residual thinking (e.g., How much more to make one?). This game requires a deck of playing cards and a simple game-board (using the game-board is optional). Nearest to One is suitable for students in upper primary school (Years 4-7), and requires two players.
