The War between 'School Time' and 'Colored People's Time'
Streamas, John
Teaching in Higher Education, v25 n6 p709-721 2020
Among the many problems facing higher education today one of the seemingly most unresolvable is diversity. Not only a matter of statistical representation, diversity involves universities' inability and even apparent refusal to accommodate alternative ways of knowing. Among these ways is what I call here 'Colored People's Time', or CPT. 'School Time' runs on the temporalities of the dominant white culture, and if universities aim to attract and keep both students and faculty of color they must accommodate their alternative temporalities. I propose and model a few ways of doing this.
