Bringing the Wonder of the Jurassic Coast to Your Classroom
Sampey, Carol
Primary Science, n162 p8-10 Mar 2020
Teachers in Dorset and East Devon have the benefit of the Jurassic Coast on their doorstep to help them bring the 'rocks and fossils' content of the curriculum alive. Not only is the area breathtakingly beautiful, but it is also rich in educational resources. If schools are not in an area close enough to make a class visit possible, how can teachers still use this area to inspire children? To address this, the Jurassic Coast Trust, with funding and support from the Primary Science Teaching Trust, has produced a set of free online resources entitled 'The Big Jurassic Classroom'. It aims to enhance children's experiences of earth science by providing ideas to inspire them, not only to look closely at rocks, fossils and landscape, wherever they may live, but also to engage with the stories rocks can tell and discover 'pebble personality'! In this article, the author demonstrates how distance doesn't stop making use of the Jurassic Coast as a stimulus for teaching about rocks.
