Embodied Practice: Reflections of a Physically Disabled Art Therapist in Social and Medical Disability Spaces
Beck, Brianna
Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association, v37 n2 p62-69 2020
This article presents the author's experiences of practicing as an art therapist with a visible disability working alongside disabled art therapy participants in two settings--one that operates from the social model of disability and the other from the medical model of disability. Based on autoethnographic research, the author describes community and clinical examples that exemplify challenges and advantages of being disabled as a helping professional and the role of institutions and the broader culture. Art therapists are encouraged to incorporate intersectionality, transformative stance, solidarity, and representation to combat ableism for disabled therapists and disabled clients.
