The goal of this study was to identify factors perceived by rural older adults as important for their old-age economic circumstances. Ten individuals aged between 55-85 years from one rural village in Kenya were interviewed. The interviews were analyzed using tenets of interpretive phenomenological analysis. Four themes emerged from the data: divine providence, filial support, life transitions, and financial independence. Despite indicating a general sense of contentment with their economic status, the participants acknowledged the role of God and pragmatic role performance of adult children in financial support. They also recognized the economic impacts of events, such as deaths. Contrary to studies that highlight absolute dependence on family support among elders in Kenya, a key finding was great desire for financial independence in old age. The data also highlighted different adaptation strategies used by these respondents. These results have implications for public pension policies and add to the growing body of literature on the old-age economic security in Sub-Saharan Africa.
