Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Following Childbirth: A Meta-Ethnography
Roberts, Elizabeth; Norman, Paul; Barton, Jane
Journal of Ethnographic & Qualitative Research, v11 n2 p154-170 Win 2016
This article presents the findings of a meta-ethnographic study reporting women's experiences of postpartum Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The WoK, Pubmed, PsychINFO and Google Scholar databases were searched for the period from January 1994 to November 2015, using keywords including traumatic birth, qualitative research, and PTSD. Seven articles were included and analyzed following the procedures of Noblit and Hare (1988) and Malpass et al. (2009). Through this process, the articles aligned with two groups: (1) factors contributing to the development of PTSD and (2) the lived experience of PTSD. Reported factors contributing to postpartum PTSD included lack of support, loss of control and integrity, and disruptions to memory. The experience of living with postpartum PTSD was found to have an impact on a broad range of psychosocial domains, including pervasive difficulties with trusting others and a shift in participants' world views. The review considers study limitations and clinical implications, including the need to assess for postpartum PTSD.
