Photovoice is an innovative participatory action research (PAR) method that empowers groups, especially marginalized ones, to define, analyze, and critique their communities through photography and the analyses of photographs. The purpose of this study was to showcase the implementation of the different steps of photovoice methodology. The first step describes the selection and the recruitment of photovoice participants. In this study, 30 participants were recruited through purposeful sampling technique. The second step introduces the approaches through which photovoice methodology is introduced to participants. In the second stage of this research, I facilitated a group discussion about cameras, power, and ethics and obtained informed consent from the participants. The third step introduced the participants to initial themes and instructions for taking pictures and using the cameras. The fourth step showcases the empowerment of participants through their collective process of data analysis, coding, and identification of themes. The final step outlines the ways in which the participants choose to share their photographs and stories for the purpose of making change. Through the implementation of these steps, I demonstrate how photovoice is used to empower participants to share their experiences and find solutions to the problems they identify.
