Just Doing the Do: A Case Study Testing Creativity and Innovative Processes as Complex Adaptive Systems
Turner, John R.; Baker, Rose
New Horizons in Adult Education & Human Resource Development, v32 n2 p40-61 Spr 2020
The current research study utilized a case study research method to test the theory that the creativity and innovative processes are a complex adaptive system. Through qualitative interviews with renowned creators, the current study categorized the data into eight characteristics of complex adaptive systems: path dependent, systems have a history, non-linearity, emergence, irreducible, adaptive, order and chaos, and self-organizing. This study advances the literature by being the first to identify and test the creativity and innovative processes as a complex adaptive system. The current study also extends the theoretical model for creativity and innovation by providing support for each of the eight characteristics of a complex adaptive system. The supported model provides a new perspective on creativity and innovation that could benefit organizational research and how these processes are managed.
