Marrs Fuchsel, Catherine L.
Journal of Ethnographic & Qualitative Research, v13 n1 p34-45 Fall 2018
The purpose of the present study was to examine the experiences of six bilingual Spanish-English speaking mental health professionals who facilitated groups using the Sí, Yo Puedo (translated in English as Yes, I Can) curriculum and program within a six-year period in two Midwestern states. Designed for immigrant Latinas, the main components of the program are self-esteem building and education and knowledge of healthy relationships, dating, and domestic violence within a Latino cultural framework. Field research and in-depth structured interviews were conducted to examine the experiences of group facilitators with (a) the Sí, Yo Puedo Program Manual, (b) weekly topics outlined by Si, Yo Puedo and (c) facilitation of Si, Yo Puedo therapeutic groups. Findings indicated group facilitator's general positive experience with the Sí, Yo Puedo, curriculum and program. Group facilitators described clear instructions, useful weekly sessions, and an overall fulfilling and enriching experience using the Si, Yo Puedo program.
