Journal of Ethnographic & Qualitative Research, v12 n4 p261-278 Sum 2018
The present study examined manifestations of mental health concerns in response to gender-based violence, specifically rape, in an African post-conflict setting. The population is a sample of female adolescents, aged 13-18 years old, residing in an Internally Displaced Person's camp in Northern Uganda. Through semi-structured interviews, the teenagers shared their experiences of gender-based violence. The aim of the present research was to better understand the mental health experiences of Northern Ugandan teens within the cultural context of their lives. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, 30 transcripts were analyzed in order to explore the teens' experiences regarding rape, mental health, and cultural and contextual stressors. Findings show that these adolescents described experiencing symptoms similar to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) characteristics, as outlined in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM). Additionally, the adolescents described contextual stressors, such as interpersonal relationships and the threat of HIV, which reportedly contributed to negative mental health outcomes. I discuss potential practice and policy implications inherent in the present study's results, particularly with regard to the context of mental health symptoms.
