Exploring the Role of Self-Efficacy in Prospective Teachers' Career Decision-Making
Frazier, Raelynn; Bendixen, Lisa D.; Hoskins, Wendy J.
Journal of Ethnographic & Qualitative Research, v13 n4 p261-271 Sum 2019
The decision to choose teaching as a career is a commitment fewer people are making and a decision that is rife with complexity. The current state of teacher shortages and attrition both nationally and internationally impels us to investigate this situation. Within the area of career decision-making, the concept being researched most focuses on career decision-making self-efficacy. The purpose of this present study was to explore the role of self-efficacy in prospective teachers' career decision-making. Participants (n=151) responded to open-ended essays focused on career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE). Thematic analysis was used in order to identify passionate self-efficacy and meta self-efficacy as the two most important components of prospective teachers' CDMSE. Findings suggest that teacher educators need to capitalize on the passionate self-efficacy of beginning pre-service teachers. Implications for future research and teacher education are also discussed.
