The Touch of Grace Module Project: Exploring Human Services and Nursing Students' Perceptions Regarding End-of-Life and Palliative Care
Bear, Sarah; Chandran, Devyani
Journal of Ethnographic & Qualitative Research, v14 n2 p112-124 Win 2019
In the present study, we explore nursing and human services students' perceptions regarding palliative and end-of-life care. Students viewed five educational modules that covered areas such as the role of support staff, communication, pain management, coping with grief, and death. Forty-two students participated in this present study and submitted 500-word written reflections on their perceptions concerning any two domains in the modules. Students emphasized learning about non-verbal communication and care, the impact of culture on pain manifestation, and the process of grief. Students also focused on the experience of engaging with one's own mortality when grappling with caring for a dying patient and the impact of provider's death anxiety on care provision. Implications include providing educational opportunities for students to improve their cultural competence, having deeper conversations regarding death and dying, and increasing interdisciplinary and collaborative education among future professionals in the areas of end-of-life and palliative care.
