Eco-Visualizations: Facilitating Ecological Relationships and Raising Environmental Awareness
Dean, Kayla P.; Bertling, Joy G.
Art Education, v73 n3 p54-61 2020
Encompassing complex scatter plots, visually friendly infographics, and surprising works of contemporary art, data visualizations are as diverse as the disciplines from which they emerge. Over the past few decades, a strand of data visualizations has emerged that engage with ecological and sustainability topics and issues, such as concerns for the health of biological organisms and their habitats, particularly in relation to human activities. In 2005, Tiffany Holmes coined the term "eco-visualization" to describe this subgroup of visualizations: "artworks that respond to ecological data by reinterpreting them through new technological and artistic means with the aim of educating and actually changing consumer behavior." Facilitating ecological relationships and raising environmental awareness of eco-visualizations is presented in this article.
