On Science, Culture, and Curriculum: Enhancing Native American Participation in Science-Related Fields

The application of appropriate forms of Native science, culturally responsive education, and creative strategizing in the teaching and learning of science enhances the participation of Native American students. The fact that science is presented in most American schools entirely from the Western cultural perspective can create very real psychological conflicts for a student raised in a different cultural tradition. This conflict results in alienation. Insights gained from research in these areas have implications for the way science is communicated to Native students and can form a basis for the creation of comprehensive, culturally responsive science curriculum for Native American learners.
