A Coulomb's Pendulum Simulator
Physics Education, v55 n4 Article 045005 Jul 2020
At the end of the 18th-century, Charles Coulomb developed an apparatus to study the force between two electrified beads which allowed him to obtain his famous Coulomb's law. Today, as one of the most fundamental outcomes in classical electromagnetism, his result is revisited in most high school physics courses, where students are asked to reproduce his formula, often relying on inaccurate assemblies. As an alternative, we would like to bring to the reader's attention a realistic, yet simple computer-based simulator to replicate a Coulomb's pendulum. Using this software, students can obtain an accurate set of data, allowing them to concentrate on the interpretation techniques, thus leading them to a better understanding of the process. The software is available as a free download.
