Whole Family Engagement: STEM Education at United Tribes Technical College
Bahnson, Anna
Tribal College Journal of American Indian Higher Education, v31 n4 Sum 2020
Twenty-two percent of students at United Tribes Technical College (UTTC) in Bismarck, North Dakota, have dependents. UTTC offers a wide array of family support, including a wellness center complete with fitness classes and personal trainers, a full-time safety and security department, childcare from infants to school age, housing with multiple options to fit different situations, dining services, and student employment opportunities. With 81% of students classified as low income, the college has a campus cupboard to combat food insecurity and a campus closest to provide professional clothing for internships and job interviews. Although many tribal colleges and universities (TCUs) offer similar programs for families, UTTC offers a whole-family science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) program that ranges from informal STEM events for families to more formal science programs at their on-campus elementary school to active research opportunities within their STEM academic degree programs. Formal STEM programs include an Associate of Science degree and a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science and research, an Associate of Science degree in pre-engineering, an Associate of Applied Science degree in computer information technology, and a new Associate of Applied Science degree in sustainable agriculture and food systems. In this article, three students relate their stories, illuminating how the institution and its faculty have accommodated their families and incorporated them into college life.
