Learning from Klein: Examining Current Interdisciplinary Practices within U.S. Higher Education
Holley, Karri A.
Issues in Interdisciplinary Studies, v37 n2 p17-32 2019
In this article, I consider Klein's scholarship as a foundation to examine the realities of interdisciplinary practice in higher education institutions, including questions of who engages in interdisciplinary work, how interdisciplinary work is supported, and how interdisciplinary work is organized. In discussing each of these issues, I underscore elements of the higher education context, including funding, enrollment, and staffing. I identify areas that require future research regarding higher education and interdisciplinarity, specifically research engaging questions of inequality in access and outcomes and research examining educational delivery modalities such as hybrid and online learning and the effectiveness of interdisciplinary curricula and pedagogies in these environments.
