Response to John Raven: Diving in Where Angels Fear to Tread: Pre-Requisites to Evidence-Based Interventions
Putwain, David W.
Psychology of Education Review, v44 n1 p35-38 Spr 2020
John Raven's article concerns the relationship between policy and evidence, what role that relationship plays in shaping the society in which we live, and what role researchers might play in shaping the relationship between policy and evidence. Although published in a "Psychology of Education Review", some of the examples draw beyond the confines of education to illustrate their point. Moreover, the conclusions drawn for the British Psychological Society and psychologists more generally (whether members of the BPS or not) are not limited to those with a research or practitioner focus on education. David W. Putwain, the author of this response, does do not have an issue with the broad focus and the use of non-educational illustrative examples. He did wonder, however, having come to the end of the article, whether it had attempted too much in taking such a broad remit. He also wonders whether the arguments contained within the article might have been better served in a series of separate articles that allowed John Raven to explore each more fully and perhaps, for a readership of "The Psychology of Education Review", focused specifically on the issues that are most germane to this audience. Perhaps because of the nature of this article, he does not have an overall commentary, but rather his response focuses on two specific points: (1) Reductionism and educational research; and (2) The Use of Narrow (Single Variable) Evaluations.
