Stories in the Air: Director Self-Disclosure in the Theatre with Youth Rehearsal Space
Horn, Elizabeth Brendel
Research in Drama Education, v25 n2 p195-200 2020
In the midst of directing a production of Linda Daugherty's EAT (it's not about food), a play about eating disorders, the author of this paper found herself simultaneously reckoning with and receiving treatment for her own eating disorder. In this intersection of art and life, the author had to choose how this recent personal development would influence her practice within the production. Presenting an analysis of this experience using an arts-based self-study, this paper considers the role and value of self-disclosure in theatre with youth using three dimensions of self-disclosure: amount, relevance, and negativity.
