Connecting to the Real World: Incorporating Student Consulting Projects in Real Estate Programs
Calnan, Ray R.; Cours, Deborah A.; Williams, Melanie Stallings
Journal of Education for Business, v95 n1 p59-65 2020
Universities face challenges in developing new programs that satisfy students, employers, faculty and administrators, and accreditors. In designing a master in real estate degree, stakeholders desired field-based learning experiences providing significant opportunities for real estate students to develop and apply academic concepts, give meaningful assistance to small businesses, and foster constructive relationships between universities and the larger business community. The authors address these challenges by incorporating student consulting service learning projects as a program's culminating experience. The authors review the research on student-based projects, discuss its application in real estate programs, and provide guidelines for other educational institutions to adapt for their own programs.
