Unintended Consequences of Repeated Sponsored Work Experiences for Youths with Visual Impairments
Cmar, Jennifer L.
Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness, v113 n6 p566-568 Nov 2019
Research about the effectiveness of sponsored work experiences for youths with visual impairments is scarce, and the only research conducted on this topic has indicated that school-sponsored work experiences were not associated with future employment. In contrast, youths who found their own jobs had better future employment outcomes. Building on these findings, the authors of this article added job-search skills training to an established vocational rehabilitation summer work experience program as part of an ongoing research study. During the summer work experience program, youths spent about six weeks working with an employer in the community, and they were paid by the vocational rehabilitation agency. Agency staff arranged this work experience on behalf of the youths who could enroll in the program on an annual basis. Some youths in the study who enrolled in the summer work experience program also participated in a weeklong job-search skills training program that aimed to empower them to seek paid employment by teaching them job-search skills and increasing their confidence. This article discusses the following potential drawbacks of sponsored work experiences when youths have access to them on an ongoing basis: (1) no distinction between sponsored work and paid employment; (2) reduced motivation for job-seeking; and (3) choosing sponsored work over paid jobs.
