Tactile Teaching Methods Support Students with Visual Impairment in Training for a Career in Chiropractic
Joshi, Aditi; Ray, Sue; Odierna, Donna H.; Smith, Monica
Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness, v113 n6 p557-565 Nov 2019
As researchers, faculty, and staff who have worked with students with disabilities including visual impairments, the authors aimed to explore chiropractic as an academic choice for people with visual impairments and how such programs should be adapted to serve these students. They interviewed students, faculty, and staff at a chiropractic college in the Western United States. The objective was to document their experiences with tactile methods as pedagogical tools to support success for individuals with visual impairments in a doctoral-level program that prepares students for chiropractic careers. Findings showed that using tactile methods of instruction supports learning for visually impaired students in a chiropractic program. Results are consistent with the authors' previous research that identified overall barriers and facilitators of learning for students with visual impairments (Joshi & Ray, 2018), and other studies that suggest that visually impaired students can successfully complete science-oriented programs when the means to acquire the requisite knowledge are provided.
