A Response to Kelly's (2019) "Toward a Moratorium on Publishing in the Field of Educational Studies: Where Is This Train Going?"
Educational Studies: Journal of the American Educational Studies Association, v55 n6 p707-711 2019
In his 2018 American Educational Studies Association (AESA) Presidential Address, Hilton Kelly (2019) called the AESA membership to both individual and collective moratoria. He asserted that the purpose of the moratoria is "to reacquaint ourselves with the mission, purpose, and history of the AESA and to understand who we are and what we do as teachers and scholars." After reflecting personally, talking with Kelly the following day, and reading the text of the speech, the author came to see moratoria as necessary. The author envisions Kelly's call for a moratorium on publishing as an exercise in three domains: a field (i.e., educational studies or educational research) revisiting its intellectual and practical commitments; an organization (i.e., AESA) revisiting its mission and vision; and a scholar revisiting her scholarly mission. It may not be possible for the field to shut itself down for a period of reflection, but it is possible to take time to check in as individuals and as institutional actors to consider where and how we may have strayed from individual and collective values, missions, and goals.
