Earth Power: Sustainable Infrastructure at Turtle Mountain Community College
Davis, Wesley
Tribal College Journal of American Indian Higher Education, v31 n2 Win 2019
Over the past 10 years, Turtle Mountain Community College (TMCC) in Belcourt, North Dakota, has developed a formula for sustainable infrastructure development. The college does not take natural resources, use them, and then dump chemicals, carbon monoxide, or other toxic waste back into the ecosystem. Instead, the college has invested in infrastructure that employs a technology called "exergy" to control all of TMCC's energy resources, as well as the campus's mechanical system, to ensure the college operates at maximum efficiency. This approach is not only environmentally sustainable, but economically sound as well. This article discusses TMCC's wind turbine initiative, changes made to TMCC's mechanical schedule and operational hours to save money, and currently developing projects that demonstrate how Native communities can attain sovereignty through sustainable energy.
