A Lifeline for Student Affairs: Developing Internal MOUs

Informal partnerships between divisions of academic and student affairs units are common practice on many university campuses. History and traditions are rich at institutions, and individuals often assume successful programs and services between divisions of academic and student affairs will always continue; however, there is no guarantee because in many instances these partnerships/collaborations are casual in nature. Assumptions about roles and expectations of these events, programs, and/or services not formally organized can lead to confusion and mistrust. How to solve this dilemma? The answer is to develop a formal written agreement that serves as a "lifeline" for the continuance of the program or activity for the institution. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is commonly referenced as the document that establishes a formalized agreement between the institution and an outside entity such as another institution or agency. As outlined on the University of Sussex's website, MOUs are generally seen as examples of collaboration that have positive impacts for all parties involved (University of Sussex, 2018). An internal MOU can help outline each area's responsibilities and removes any uncertainty. It can help confirm the relevance of what the staff in the division of student affairs provides to the academic areas and what academic affairs gives back to student affairs. In addition to MOUs with student and academic affairs, other partnerships with student affairs may be beneficial to other divisions within the university. This article describes steps the division of student affairs needs to take first to move forward with drafting an MOU.
