Using Data Holistically to Create a Student Success Safety Net
Devlin, Maura; Bushey, Heather
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v51 n6 p17-25 2019
With national graduation rates that range from 32% among open enrollment institutions to 66% among private not-for-profits, higher education institutions have a moral imperative to improve the success of their students. Interventions to support today's students must consider the student holistically, be just-in-time, and come from a strengths-based approach as much as is possible. To create an ecosystem that supports students from these frameworks, institutions should combine the various functionally specialized and siloed data sources to understand how to respond to students' various identities. One key element of ensuring that students achieve successful outcomes is the continuous review of and reflection on not only operating theories but on practices in action (Schön, 1983). A second key lesson learned is that only through being informed through data about students and being hyper-attentive to their learning experiences and resource needs from a holistic perspective can we be truly student-centered. Data analytics, mined from the combining of various data streams, are best utilized under consistent business rules so all student-serving higher education practitioners and faculty are rowing in the same direction.
