Exploring Resident Assistants' Demonstration of Socially Responsible Leadership

Using the social change model of leadership development as a way to measure leadership abilities in resident assistants (RAs), this study investigated RAs' demonstration of the seven values-consciousness of self, congruence, commitment, collaboration, common purpose, controversy with civility, and citizenship--associated with this model. These values are all focused on social change and are grouped in three categories: individual, group, and community values. RAs were compared to other student leaders (OSLs) of similar levels of responsibility to determine if these characteristics were unique to RAs. In addition, the study was meant to determine if these values could predict if a student leader was serving as an RA or an OSL. Citizenship was the only value, of the seven, that predicted a student leader serving as an RA rather than an OSL. When controlling for pre-college factors, RAs did not score significantly higher than the other leaders for any of the seven values. Residence life educators are encouraged to review current practices, such as RA training, and incorporate the seven values of the Social Change Model of Leadership Development to enhance development in RA leadership outcomes.
