Ledford, Elyse; Berson, Ilene R.; Berson, Michael J.; Ledford, Alexander
Social Studies and the Young Learner, v32 n2 p10-15 Nov-Dec 2019
This guided inquiry launched a year-long study centered on social justice issues and people who have championed change in our communities and nation. The article, offers resources and activities that highlight Patsy Mink's congressional achievements and experiences, and push young students to think about the institution of Congress with a gendered lens. The design of this inquiry allows students to delve into the concept of community in their own context before moving into the exploration of the life and works of Patsy Mink. This first-grade inquiry is expected to span approximately a week's time, delivered in 20-to-30-minute lessons. This time frame may be adjusted based on students' background knowledge and experience, and timing should account for the individual class needs. Supporting questions and sources for inquiry activities are also provided.
