Adolescent Suicide Prevention in the Context of Social Media--Part 2: Suggestions
Niznik, Marina; Poland, Scott; Lieberman, Richard
Communique, v48 n4 p1, 17-19 Dec 2019
As 69% of 12-15 year olds have social media profiles (Ofcom, 2019), the widespread impact, ease of accessibility, and frequent access makes online social networks a promising avenue to address adolescent suicide. The lines between technology and education have been increasingly blurred (Brodwin, 2019) and seemingly have now merged with mental health. Therefore, school personnel are well positioned to harness the reach of social media to enhance suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention. This article begins by discussing a number of widely available resources of which school psychologists should be aware. It goes on to describe strategies that school personnel can use in their prevention efforts. Next, it outlines critical practices, procedures, and resources that school personnel should be aware of to guide their interventions. Finally, it discusses strategies that school personnel can use in their postvention efforts. This is Part 2 of a two-part series.
