A Feeling for the Past: The Role of Emotion in History Education
Neumann, Dave
Social Education, v83 n5 p276-280 Oct 2019
Engaging emotion is essential to effective history instruction. This may strike some as a banal observation, as we have long known that student enthusiasm and engagement are key elements of learning. If asked, many teachers would use emotionally-laden vocabulary to describe their commitment to the profession: love of history, passion about student success, excitement about effective learning. Recent research confirms this link between teacher passion and powerful teaching, indicating that one key feature of outstanding teachers is joyfulness in their work. Though many teachers already intuitively engage their students emotionally, many would benefit from being more consciously self-reflective about the role of emotion in history classrooms, strategically injecting it into activities to deepen the impact of instruction. In this article, the author first makes a case for why the role of emotion in history education should be given serious attention. Then he suggests five concrete ways to integrate emotion with historical thinking in classroom instruction.
