The Early Childhood Workforce Initiative: A Hub of Empowerment and Support
Rentzou, Konstantina
Childhood Education, v95 n6 p59-65 2019
Early childhood development (ECD) policies and programs are increasingly recognized as having a strong, positive impact at both the individual (e.g., learning, health, behavior) and societal (e.g., inclusion, social cohesion, earnings) levels. Yet, little attention is given to the lived experiences and working conditions of the workforce who deliver ECD services. The Early Childhood Workforce Initiative (ECWI), co-chaired by Results for Development and the International Step by Step Association, aims to address this challenge by producing new knowledge and equipping decision-makers with the tools and resources needed to support the development of a quality early childhood workforce at scale. This article discusses how ECWI takes a holistic and multi-sectoral approach, focusing on volunteers, paraprofessionals, and professionals who promote the healthy growth, development, and learning of young children. It goes on to describe how ECWI makes an impact and meets its objectives. It concludes with a brief synopsis of the challenges and lessons learned through ECWI.
