Describes "Chemistry and the Human Environment," a one-semester experimental course for freshman and sophomore nonscience majors. Fundamental chemical principles are introduced in class only on a "need to know" basis; each student investigates a special topic of his own choosing relating an urgent social problem quite specifically to detailed chemistry.
