Geo-Inquiry: Informed Action to Make Our World a Better Place
Oberle, Alex; Bess, Joy; Ehmke, Kelsey; Rath, Shelley; Robbins, Amber
Geography Teacher, v16 n4 p170-178 2019
With new standards in social science and science, student-centered inquiry drives contemporary geography education. This article introduces and explains the Geo-Inquiry Process. Developed by the National Geographic Society, the Geo-Inquiry Process centers on the fundamental nature of global interconnectedness, the idea that wise decisions at all scales require a deeper understanding of the interactions among dynamic and complex human and physical systems (National Geographic Society 2017). Ideally designed for middle-level students, the process builds the knowledge, skills, and perspective of a geographer, concurrent with instilling the habits of mind and confidence necessary for cultivating enduring civic engagement. Geo-Inquiry encompasses the range of tools and techniques that geographers employ, both traditional and cutting-edge, introducing a process that college-ready students will need in their future university science and social science courses. The five phases of Geo Inquiry include: (1) Ask; (2) Collect; (3) Visualize; (4) Create; and (5) Act. Since Geo-Inquiry is a process rather than a curriculum or set of standards, the five phases of Geo-Inquiry can spark an almost limitless choice of student projects, articulating with nearly any state standard. Examples of this process in action are demonstrated by the exemplary projects that are highlighted in this article.
